ERR_URL_UNSUPPORTED_TYPE β€” URL File Type Not Supported

HTTP Status: 400 Retryable: No Automatic retry: None.

What the User Sees

A warning toast: β€œThis link points to a . Gevell PDF converts a PDF, Word (.docx), image (PNG, JPG, GIF, TIFF, WebP), or audio (MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC) file.” The type is named: PowerPoint (.pptx), Excel (.xlsx), older Office file (.doc/.ppt/.xls), ZIP archive, video file, plain text, and so on. The next step depends on the type:

  • PowerPoint: use Gevell Slides (pptx.gevell.com), or export the deck as PDF.
  • Older Office file: save it as .docx or PDF.
  • Anything else: export or save it as a PDF.

What Causes This Error

utils/url-content-sniff.ts identifies the downloaded bytes by signature, never by header or extension. For ZIP-based files it reads the archive’s central directory, so only real top-level members count (word/document.xml, ppt/presentation.xml, xl/workbook.xml). The file was none of the importable types.

details carries:

  • detectedType: the human label
  • extension: when known
  • detectedKind: 'legacy-office': a stable code the client branches on for OLE files

The accepted-formats sentence comes from URL_IMPORT_ACCEPTED_FORMATS in @accessible-pdf/shared. Keep it in step with ALLOWED_EXTENSIONS.

Resolution Steps

For Users

  1. Convert the file to PDF or .docx, then upload it or link to it.
  2. For PowerPoint decks, use Gevell Slides.

For Administrators

  1. No admin action is needed.
  2. If a supported file is misidentified (for example an unusual MP4 audio brand), add a signature to sniffContent with a test.
